PSYCHO-SOCIAL ASSESSEMENT & COUNSELLING
Psycho-social problems can interfere with the practical aspects of vocational rehabilitation. Injury can produce large social and emotional consequences. It can create emotional distress, disrupt relationships, accentuate pre-existing problems and cause financial stress. Until these issues are addressed some workers find it difficult to focus upon their workplace rehabilitation and returnback to work.
An assessment takes into consideration:
• Worker’s level of physical, psychological and social functioning (strengths, limitations, their understanding and view of the situation)
• Motivation of the worker to undertake rehabilitation or return to work
• Relevant environmental/social factors that may contribute to problems or impinge upon the situation
• Contribution of partner or family on a worker’s situation or problems
A report is provided which details the client’s circumstances with recommendations required for the client to make gains in their workplaceon a vocational rehabilitation programme.
In conjunction, support counselling is often provided as an adjunct to the worker’s overall vocational rehabilitation programme.
